Nandi East Security Forces Arrest Five in Crackdown on Illicit Brew

NANDI HILLS, Kenya — In a concerted effort to combat the production and distribution of illicit brews, security officers in Nandi East, led by Sub County Police Commander Francis Omulo, have arrested five individuals, including four women and one man. The operation, which took place on Saturday, targeted the illegal alcohol trade that has been a concern in the region.

According to Kenya News Agency, the operation focused on Kisoga and Seiyo villages within the Nandi Hills Ward, leading to the seizure of chang’aa, kangara, and the equipment used in their production. “Officers drawn from Nandi East Sub County, under the command of Sub County Police Commander and in collaboration with area chiefs, conducted an operation on illicit brew at Kisoga village, Kidoga sub-location in Ainapngetuny location, and Seiyo village, Kapkoros sub-location in Kapkoros location, resulting in the arrest of four individuals,” Omulo stated.

A subsequent raid in Kipsamo village led to the arrest of an additional suspect, further underscoring the security team’s commitment to eradicating the illicit brew menace in the area.

The individuals apprehended include Janet Chemeli, 39, caught with 30 liters of kangara and 5 liters of chang’aa; Teresa Sitienei, 55, with 20 liters of kangara; Gladys Chepkemboi, 43, with 20 liters of kangara and 4 liters of chang’aa; Peter Bor, 38, in possession of 20 liters of kangara; and Sarah Cherobon, 45, with 20 liters of kangara. They are currently being held at Nandi Hills police station and are expected to be arraigned before the Kapsabet court on Monday, February 26, 2024.

This latest operation is part of an ongoing campaign by the Nandi East security team to clamp down on the illegal alcohol trade, which poses significant health and social risks to the community. The authorities remain vigilant in their efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of residents by removing dangerous substances from circulation.
