Tragic Road Accident Claims Lives of Three Pupils in Murang’a

MURANG’A, Kenya — A devastating road accident on the Gitugi-Murang’a road on Saturday evening resulted in the death of three pupils, with several others injured and receiving medical treatment. The accident involved a school bus from Maadili School in Juja, carrying 38 pupils, three teachers, and two drivers returning from Scouts Founder’s Day celebrations in Nyeri County.

According to Kenya News Agency, the accident occurred at around 6:20 PM when the bus driver, who is now receiving treatment at Murang’a Hospital, lost control near the Mathioya bridge in the Ruiru area, causing the vehicle to plunge into a ditch. One pupil died at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries at Murang’a Level 5 Hospital, where they had been rushed for emergency care.

The Murang’a County Disaster and Emergency team were quick to respond to the scene, aiding in the rescue of the pupils. Some of the injured were taken to Maragua Rural Hospital for treatment. Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata expressed his sorrow over the incident and extended his condolences to the families of the deceased. He commended the medical staff at Murang’a Level 5 Hospital for their prompt response to the emergency.

Governor Kang’ata also noted that among the injured, five pupils were admitted to the intensive care unit. He mentioned that some parents, upon arriving at the hospital, requested their children be transferred to other hospitals of their choice for further treatment.

“It was sad to see young pupils with big dreams perish in the accident. As the County Government of Murang’a, we send our condolences to the parents and relatives of the deceased,” said Kang’ata, lamenting the tragic loss of life and the impact on the school community and families involved.

The incident has cast a shadow over the local community, prompting calls for enhanced road safety measures to prevent future tragedies.
