Nakuru County: Nakuru County, in collaboration with AAK-Grow, organized a community meeting in Lengenet, Visoi Ward, Rongai Sub-County. The meeting focused on the growing problem of pesticide misuse among local farmers.

According to Kenya News Agency, Mrs. Hannah Odour, a County Entomologist, discussed the potential dangers associated with improper pesticide disposal. She pointed out that mishandling pesticides could lead to water contamination, negatively affecting aquatic life and posing risks to human health. Additionally, pesticide misuse can harm wildlife, disrupt ecosystems, and cause health issues such as respiratory problems, skin irritation, and neurological disorders.

Mrs. Odour noted that various factors contribute to the difficulties in proper pesticide disposal. A significant issue is the lack of awareness among farmers regarding the risks of pesticide misuse and the importance of safe disposal practices. Limited access to disposal facilities is another challenge, as hazardous waste collection
centers may be scarce or unavailable in rural areas. Furthermore, due to economic constraints, some farmers might choose cheaper, less regulated pesticides, which are harmful to both the environment and human health.

During the meeting, the importance of responsible pesticide use was emphasized, including proper storage to prevent accidental spills and poisoning. Villagers were advised on the significance of disposing of empty pesticide containers properly instead of repurposing them for drinking or carrying milk. They were also educated on identifying illegal pesticides to ensure both efficacy and safety.

Mrs. Odour concluded by stressing the importance of addressing disposal issues to empower farmers with knowledge and resources. This is seen as a significant step toward protecting public health and the environment in rural Kenya.
