Nigeria Islamic Police destroys 3.8 million bottles of impounded beer

KANO (Nigeria)— Hisbah Board, the Islamic Police in northern Nigeria’s Kano State have destroyed over 3.8 million bottles of assorted beer confiscated in the last few months.

Head of the Board, Dr. Harun Ibn-Sina who spoke to the media during the exercise that took place on Wednesday, reiterated existing state-level legislation that completely banned alcohol.

He explained that the body he leads was winning the broader fight against abuse of illicit substances, be they drugs, intoxicants and others.

The state government okayed the destruction following which they secured a court order to proceed with the exercise.

The sale, consumption or possession of alcoholic substances is outlawed in the state which is under the Federal Republic of Nigeria but also operates Shariah – Islamic law.

It is not the first time that Hisbah has either seized alcohol or destroyed supplies. In September 2021, Hisbah reported the impoundment of two vehicles that had over 5,700 cartons of beer in them.
