Elgeyo Marakwet County Distributes 52 Kilograms of Pyrethrum Seeds to Boost Local Farming Economy

Elgeyo Marakwet—Farmers in Marakwet West Sub-county received 52 kilograms of free pyrethrum seeds on Tuesday, marking a significant effort to advance the cultivation of this high-value cash crop in the region.

According to a new release by Kenya News Agency, the initiative aims to empower over 500 local farmers by covering 130 acres of land with pyrethrum seeds. Pyrethrum, known for its insecticidal properties, is often referred to as ‘white gold’ for its economic importance.

Kentegra Company, an entity active in the pyrethrum sector, is partnering with farmers to amplify production and ease the sale of pyrethrum flowers. The company has purchased over 14 tonnes of pyrethrum flowers from farmers in the county, reaffirming its commitment to meeting growing demand. The next phase will extend the initiative to additional wards within the region.

Speaking at Matira in Kapsowar Ward, Governor Rotich acknowledged the enthusiasm of county residents in adopting cash crop farming. He stressed that such endeavors are crucial for economic development and poverty alleviation. Rotich also guided interested parties to contact county agriculture officers and Kentegra field officers for registration and further instruction.

Pyrethrum farming not only offers economic gains but also environmental benefits. The crop is a natural source of pyrethrin, an insecticide used in various pest control products, reducing the need for chemical pesticides.

As global demand for products like insecticides and pesticides continues to grow, the potential for job creation and economic stimulation in Elgeyo Marakwet County remains promising. Both local farmers and Kentegra Company have expressed their commitment to expanding pyrethrum cultivation, adding to the region’s stature as a production hub for this important crop.

The distribution of free pyrethrum seeds signifies the commitment of Elgeyo Marakwet County to the well-being and economic progress of its residents. Collaborative efforts between the government, farmers, and Kentegra Company emphasize the role of public-private partnerships in agricultural development.
