Decline in Traffic-Related Deaths and Accidents in Burkina Faso

Ouagadougou – There has been a consistent decrease in the number of traffic accidents and related fatalities over the past three years in Burkina Faso, as revealed by official data released on Saturday by the AIB. The trend indicates that if this decrease continues, the total number of deaths due to traffic accidents in the first quarter of 2023 will be below 1000, a reduction from 1150 in 2022 and 1272 in 2021, as per the data from the National Road Safety Office (ONASER).

According to Burkina Information Agency, the total number of traffic accidents is also declining. The figures show 25,118 cases in 2021, 24,686 in 2022, and projections suggest fewer than 24,000 cases by the end of 2023. Officials from ONASER attribute these accidents primarily to excessive speed and recklessness of users. They have announced plans to enforce the mandatory use of seat belts more strictly and continue promoting the use of helmets.
