On the 5th of June, our two countries celebrated an important milestone in their relations. On that day in 1972, diplomatic relations were established between Greece and the People’s Republic of China.

We have strengthened the ties between our peoples and advanced our cooperation. Based on mutual respect and understanding.

Looking further back, fifty years is a small period, if seen in the context of the millennia of Greek and Chinese history. Our nations take immense pride in our rich cultural heritage.

Based on solid foundations, our bilateral relations are governed by an expanding institutional framework. Comprising more than one hundred agreements. ?he most important of which is the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

Our countries continue their bilateral dialogue at the highest level. President Xi visited Athens in November 2019. It was a genuine pleasure to host State Councilor Mr. Wang Yi in October 2021 in Athens and meeting him in Cambodia last August. And I look forward to my visit to Beijing.

Our countries face many global challenges. In this context, Greece, as an EU member-state, has always been a proponent of closer cooperation between Europe and China. Greece looks to China’s prominent global role as a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. Notably when it comes to the need of ensuring the primacy of international law and universal respect of the UN Charter. We highly appreciate China’s support in this regard. Notably for a just and viable solution to the Cyprus issue, based on relevant Security Council resolutions.

Investment and trade are the two sectors in which our partnership has developed the most since 1972. The Chinese investment by COSCO at the port of Piraeus became the shining example of our economic cooperation. This investment can pave the way for more projects. Greece now ranks firmly in the top-10 investment destinations in Europe.

Tourism is a sector that saw spectacular rise in recent years. Culture is another field where Greece and China are natural partners. The Ancient Civilizations Forum provides a valuable framework to work together. For the protection of cultural heritage worldwide and the fight against illicit trafficking of cultural property. This year our countries celebrate the Year of Culture and Tourism.

Looking ahead, building on our impressive track record, we remain committed to continue working together. Firmly believing that our relations can serve as an example for others to follow.
