Cholera Outbreak Leads to Closure of Hotels and Eateries

Lamu County, a cholera outbreak has prompted the Public Health Department to temporarily close all hotels and eateries. This measure, aimed at controlling the spread of the disease, follows the hospitalization of 22 patients at King Fahd Hospital, who presented symptoms like vomiting and stomach pains.

According to Kenya News Agency, the decision to close food establishments is part of a comprehensive strategy to manage the outbreak. Abubakar emphasized the department’s commitment to ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations among hoteliers and restaurant owners. Dr. Mbarak Bahjaj, the County Executive Committee Member for Health, reinforced this stance, stating that the county has effectively managed diarrhea cases and has initiated water source treatment and support for the elderly.

The outbreak’s impact on local businesses is significant, especially with the Lamu Cultural Festival approaching. Hotel and eatery owners face financial losses as they await clearance from the Public Health Department to reopen. Dr. Bahjaj has advised residents to seek immediate medical attention if they experience diarrhea and emphasized the importance of maintaining personal hygiene, including using clean, boiled water and washing hands properly.

Mkomani Ward MCA Abbas Shehuna urged the Public Health Department to intensify its efforts to contain the outbreak. He highlighted the county’s focus on health and safety measures to ensure a successful and safe Lamu Cultural Festival week.
