Mineral Resources and Energy Committee Holds Public Hearings on ERA Bill in KwaZulu-Natal

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa – The Portfolio Committee on Mineral Resources and Energy is set to conduct public hearings on the Electricity Regulations Amendment (ERA) Bill [B13-2023] in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) starting tomorrow. These hearings are part of a nationwide initiative, with KZN being the eighth province visited by the committee, following successful sessions in Limpopo, Mpumalanga, North West, Northern Cape, Free State, Gauteng, and Western Cape.

According to Parliament of South Africa, these hearings align with section 59(1)(a) of the South African Constitution, which mandates public involvement in legislative processes. The ERA Bill aims to amend the Electricity Regulation Act to improve administration, establish the Transmission System Operator SOC Ltd, and introduce an open-market platform for competitive electricity trading. The schedule for the hearings in KZN includes sessions in Amajuba, uThukela, Harry Gwala, and iLembe district municipalities, with each event taking place from 10:00 to 14:00 on respective dates and locations.
