Sergeant Maile Achieves Landmark Convictions in Crimes Against Women

POLOKWANE – Sergeant Pebetse Vanessa Maile, a dedicated detective at the Groblersdal Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences Unit in Sekhukhune District, has made significant strides in the fight against violence towards women and children. Her ten-year tenure at the unit has led to the successful conviction and sentencing of perpetrators in multiple cases, totaling 11 life sentences and an additional 74 years of imprisonment.

According to South African Police Service, One of Sergeant Maile’s notable achievements was the resolution of a complex rape case from 2016. A 20-year-old woman, after hitchhiking a ride in the Middleburg policing area to Stofberg, was raped by two men who took her to a secluded area in Magagatala, Groblersdal. The victim, abandoned by her assailants, was assisted by other motorists and reported the incident at the Laersdrift Police Station in Mpumalanga province. The case was then transferred to Groblersdal.

Sergeant Maile’s diligent investigation skills led to the collection of crucial evidence, including cigarette buds from the scene. She also re-interviewed the victim, obtaining detailed descriptions of the suspects and their vehicle. Her efforts culminated in the arrest of the suspects, Sipho Seroke Mampa, then 34, and Obed Methukwane Pilusa, 32, following an identification parade. Both were convicted of rape and sentenced in 2018 to life imprisonment each, plus 18 years.

In reflecting on her work, Sergeant Maile credits her success to divine guidance, discipline, and commitment. “I am guided by my Maker, who gives me strength and instructions,” she stated. Emphasizing the importance of enthusiasm and resilience in her role, Sergeant Maile approaches each case with the same zeal as if it were her first day on the job.

Sergeant Maile’s unwavering dedication and exceptional investigative skills continue to make a significant impact in the ongoing efforts to combat crimes against women and children in South Africa.
