Makueni Governor Distributes 600 Title Deeds to Safeguard Public Lands

MAKUENI, Kenya — In a significant move to secure public lands, Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jnr has issued 600 title deeds for various public utilities throughout the county.

According to Kenya News Agency, the initiative targets an array of community assets including churches, cattle dips, water points, and educational and technical training facilities.

The ceremony, which took place outside the Wote Town Office on Tuesday, was described by Governor Mutula as a critical step towards ensuring the communal benefit of these lands. The effort not only reinforces the concept of land ownership as a pivotal community right but also fortifies legal assurances against potential encroachments or disputes.

During the event, Governor Mutula outlined the county’s broader land registration strategy, noting the recent approval of surveys for 116 plots. He assured that allotment letters for these plots would be distributed by the end of June 2024. Additionally, forthcoming phases of the initiative will see the distribution of allotment letters to over 300 plot owners in Kikima and Nunguni towns within the next two months.

The Governor also highlighted ongoing survey and title processing activities in Kathozweni and Mtito Andei, areas where residents have faced protracted challenges in securing land titles. Further elaborating on the county’s collaborative efforts with the National Ministry for Lands, Mutula detailed the planning and title deed processing for several hundred parcels in Soko Mjinga, Kibwezi, and Misogeni.

The announcement included future plans to extend title deed issuance to other regions within Makueni, naming several settlements poised to benefit from the initiative. This comprehensive land titling program underscores Makueni County’s commitment to land tenure security, aiming to foster community stability and development.
