Busia County Director Urges Residents to Seek Early Diabetes Diagnosis

Busia — In an effort to combat diabetes, residents of Busia County have been encouraged to seek early diagnosis to minimize complications associated with the disease. This call to action was made by Dr. David Mukabi, Busia County Director for Universal Health Coverage, during the World Diabetes Day celebrations at Busia County Referral Hospital on Tuesday.

According to Kenya News Agency, timely detection and treatment of diabetes are crucial to preventing serious health issues, including complications affecting the liver, heart, and eyes. He noted that many patients only seek medical attention when their eyesight is already compromised, highlighting the importance of raising awareness about diabetes among local residents. Mukabi emphasized that community health promoters have been trained and equipped to conduct diabetes tests.

Dr. Mukabi also pointed out the correlation between diabetes and high blood pressure, underscoring the need for early screening and treatment. He revealed that the prevalence of diabetes in Busia is slightly higher than the national average, standing at 3.3% compared to 3.1% nationally. This statistic underscores the particular urgency for the residents of Busia County to be vigilant about diabetes.

The county official further advised residents to enroll in the National Hospital Health Insurance Fund. This enrollment would facilitate easier access to treatment for diabetes and other health conditions, ensuring that residents receive the necessary medical care promptly.
