Gafsa: Calm restored in Om Laarayes, phosphate transport resumed

Calm has been restored on Wednesday in the town of Om Laarayes (Gafsa Governorate), with the resumption of phosphate transport to the Tunisian Chemical Group in Gabes, after yesterday’s clashes between demonstrators, among job seekers, and the police.

According to security sources and eyewitnesses, the situation has stabilised in the city, after yesterday’s clashes between groups of protesters demanding jobs and security forces destabilised the process of transporting phosphate by truck.

In this context, a source within the Gafsa Phosphates Company (CPG) indicated that the loading of phosphates has resumed since the early hours of Wednesday, and continues at an ordinary pace, adding that “the company will increase the rate of delivery of commercial phosphates to its customers if this situation of calm continues.

The commercial phosphate production unit in Om Laarayes had resumed in early February 2023, after a year of suspension caused by protests by job seekers.
