Ministry of Social Action Supports Tomato Farming Initiative for IDPs in Namentenga

NAMENTENGA — On Friday, February 16, 2024, Abdoul Karim Tiendrébéogo, leading a delegation from the Ministry in charge of Social Action, visited a 5-hectare tomato production site operated by internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Namentenga province, North-Central region. This visit underscores the government’s commitment to supporting agricultural initiatives under the presidential ‘agrosilvopastoral offensive’.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Abdoul Karim Tiendrébéogo, the purpose of the visit was to observe firsthand the market gardening project designated for tomato cultivation by IDPs and to motivate the participants actively involved in this endeavor. The project, facilitated by the generosity of the Malgrnaba of Boulsa who provided the land, aims to foster sustainable livelihoods for displaced communities through agriculture.

The provincial director in charge of Agriculture, Mamadou Sidibé, shared details about the site’s capacity, noting its 5-hectare area and a well with a flow rate of approximately 17 cubic meters per hour. Sidibé highlighted the support extended to farmers during the previous wet season, which included the distribution of fertilizers, seeds, and technical guidance to enhance production.

During the visit, the Malgrnaba expressed gratitude on behalf of the beneficiaries for the project’s progress but also voiced concerns over delays, particularly with the construction of a water tower and the need for latrine facilities. He commended the IDPs and the broader community for their commitment to the project.

Bassouleymane Ouattara, the Secretary General of Namentenga province, conveyed the appreciation of the local authorities to the Malgrnaba of Nièga for donating the land and to the community for its engagement. Ouattara assured that the feedback regarding the need to expedite the completion of infrastructure works would be addressed promptly.

The visit from the Ministry of Social Action to the tomato production site by IDPs in Namentenga province highlights the collaborative efforts between the government, local authorities, and communities to promote agricultural development and resilience among displaced populations.
