Western Cape Police Detain Five Suspects for Unlicensed Firearms and Ammunition

Western Cape: In a concerted effort to rid the streets of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, police in the Western Cape detained five suspects in separate incidents on November 14, 2023. These arrests are part of ongoing initiatives to curb gun-related violence in the region.

According to South African Police Service, Members of the Worcester police responded to a shooting incident in River View. En route to the scene, they observed four males fleeing down David Street. The suspects were apprehended, and a 9mm pistol with ammunition was confiscated. The four adult males were arrested on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. In a separate, unrelated operation, members of the Anti-Gang Unit acted on intelligence about a firearm concealed at a specific address in Bonteheuwel. They conducted a search at the location on Prunus Street and detained an adult male for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. The suspects from both incidents are expected to make court appearances in the Worcester and Bishop Lavis Magistrate courts once they are formally charged.
