SANAA: Yemen’s Houthi group has claimed responsibility for a rocket attack targeting Israel’s Orot Rabin power plant, marking a significant escalation in regional tensions. The group announced the attack was carried out using a hypersonic ballistic missile, purportedly achieving its intended target.
According to Namibia Press Agency, Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Sarea declared on Houthi-run al-Masirah TV that the attack was a part of their military operations in support of the Mujahideen in the Gaza Strip. Sarea vowed ongoing attacks against Israel until it ceases its military actions and lifts the blockade on Gaza.
In contrast, Israeli media reported that the missile, fired from Yemen, was intercepted by Israeli defense forces, preventing damage to the power plant located south of Haifa. This incident follows a series of similar attacks by the Houthis, who have been actively involved in hostilities against Israel since November 2023.
In a related development, al-Masirah TV reported that a “U.S.-British” navy coalition conducted strikes targeting the eastern part of Saada, a city in northern Yemen, shortly after the Houthi attack on Israel. Residents indicated through social media that these strikes hit a Houthi military site, although official comments from the U.S. military are still pending.
The Houthi group, controlling much of northern Yemen, continues to engage in rocket and drone attacks against Israel, and has been involved in disrupting Israeli-linked shipping in the Red Sea. This activity is part of their initiative to express solidarity with Palestinians amidst the ongoing conflict with Israel.
