HONG KONG: Renowned Chinese fashion designer Guo Pei is currently showcasing her exceptional “museum collections” at the M+ Museum of visual culture in Hong Kong, featuring over 40 pieces that emphasize her commitment to creating couture with timeless beauty. Among the displayed works is “The Yellow Queen,” a silk embroidered gown that gained global attention when worn by pop icon Rihanna at the 2015 Met Gala.

According to Namibia Press Agency, Guo Pei, born in Beijing in 1967, progressed from designing ready-to-wear fashion to establishing her atelier, Rose Studio, in 1997. She has presented her haute couture collections at Paris Fashion Week, recognized by the Federation de la Haute Couture et de la Mode. Her designs, known for their intricate craftsmanship and artistic expression, reflect her desire to leave a lasting cultural legacy.

Guo’s creations are marked by the extensive hours invested in their production. Her inaugural couture piece, “Da Jin,” took 50,000 hours to complete, showcasing traditional Chinese techniques and Indian gold threads. Despite receiving a significant purchase offer, Guo has consistently refused to sell her art pieces, distinguishing them from her commercial fashion products.

Guo’s work, deeply rooted in Chinese cultural elements, includes collaborations with artisans from various regions. For example, “The Gold Boat” features bamboo-weaving techniques from Anhui Province, illustrating her dedication to incorporating traditional craftsmanship into her designs. Her commitment to preserving her creations for future generations is evident in her decision to donate her 1,500 preserved artworks to museums worldwide.

Through exhibitions like “Guo Pei: Fashioning Imagination,” Guo Pei continues to captivate audiences with her couture masterpieces, ensuring her artistic vision resonates beyond the fashion industry.
