Burkina Faso’s Mining Suppliers Convene to Discuss Local Content Governance

Ouagadougou – The fourth edition of the Mining Supplier Days, an event dedicated to exploring the governance of local content in the mining sector, commenced on Wednesday in Ouagadougou. Organized by the Alliance of Burkinabè Suppliers of Mining Goods and Services (ABSM), the event aims to facilitate discussions among various stakeholders in the mining industry to enhance performance and compliance.

According to Burkina Information Agency, The mining sector holds a significant position in Burkina Faso’s economy, especially since the surge in mining activities. The Mining Supplier Days serve as a platform for industry players to gain knowledge and skills essential for providing goods and services in the mining sector.

This year’s edition, taking place from December 6 to 7, 2023, focuses on the theme “Issues and Challenges of Local Content Governance in the Mining Sector in Burkina Faso.” Simon Pierre Boussim, the Minister in charge of mines and the ceremony’s patron, emphasized the importance of mining suppliers adhering to local content regulations. Acknowledging the challenging security context in which they operate, Boussim encouraged mutual support between the government and mining suppliers.

The Minister also expressed his hopes for productive discussions that would contribute to improving the impact of extractive industries on the national economy. The event features various activities including panels, B to B meetings, experience sharing, and stand exhibitions.

Yves Zongo, President of the ABSM, described the event as an opportunity for introspection. He noted that it allows participants to evaluate the framework, strategy, and operational aspects of their work. Zongo highlighted the objective of the meetings to find solutions enabling Burkinabè suppliers to secure contracts with extractive industries in the country.

He also emphasized the increasing role of Burkinabè in supporting the mining sector across the entire value chain and recommended the pooling of sub-sectors and intelligence to nationalize jobs in the industry.

Priscille Zongo, Executive Director of the Chamber of Mines, underlined the importance of the Mining Supplier Days. She stated that the event aims to build expertise among local suppliers to seize opportunities in the mining sector and become reliable partners for mining companies.

The opening ceremony concluded with officials inaugurating the exhibition stands. Hassan Nassa, an exhibitor from the Bureau of Mines and Geology of Burkina (BUMIGEB), showcased the services offered by BUMIGEB, highlighting their role as partners to mining suppliers.

Since its inception in 2017, the Mining Supplier Days have grown in popularity and become a key event for stakeholders in Burkina Faso’s mining sector.
