Former police officer convicted and sentenced for fraud and corruption

Jacob Mokone Mofokeng (40), a former detective at the Klipriver SAPS was on Friday, 4 August 2023 sentenced to 8 years direct imprisonment by the Johannesburg Magistrate Court for fraud and corruption. In 2017 while investigating a case of theft against the complainant, Mofokeng demanded money from the complainant on several occasions threatening to arrest the complainant if he did not comply with the request.

The former officer gave the complainant his bank account in which he would have to deposit money each time he demanded it. The complainant paid a total amount of R17 500 to the accused before reporting the matter to the Germiston based Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation.

An investigation was conducted and the accused was arrested in 2017. Provincial Head Major General Ebrahim Kadwa praised the investigation and prosecution team and warns any corrupt officials that no one is above the law and if found participating in illegal activities shall be dealt with in accordance with the law.
