Ethiopian Speaker Tagesse Chaffo Advocates for Transitional Justice to Foster Lasting Peace

ADDIS ABABA — Speaker of the House of People’s Representatives, Tagesse Chaffo, emphasized the necessity of implementing a transitional justice policy to secure a peaceful and prosperous future for Ethiopia. This statement was made during a consultative meeting on federal administrative procedures and transitional justice policies held in the capital.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, the recent approval of the Transitional Justice Policy by the Council of Ministers is a crucial step towards addressing past human rights violations and conflicts in Ethiopia. “Implementing this policy is essential for the better future of Ethiopia,” he stated, highlighting the importance of a participatory approach that includes truth, reconciliation, mercy, and justice.

The meeting, attended by parliamentarians and senior government officials, is part of Ethiopia’s ongoing efforts to resolve civil conflicts and human rights issues within a framework that is inclusive and human rights-oriented. However, Chaffo noted that previous approaches have not achieved lasting peace as they lacked a comprehensive and universally accepted transitional justice system.

Additionally, the Speaker pointed out the critical role of the Ministry of Justice in monitoring and coordinating the implementation of these new policies. Minister of Justice Gedion Timothewos also spoke at the event, underscoring that transitional justice is fundamental to achieving lasting peace and is vital for progressing towards a more democratic system.

The discussions at the consultative meeting are expected to further strengthen the efforts to implement policies that address the needs and rights of all citizens, paving the way for a stable and just society in Ethiopia.
