Ethiopian Council of Ministers Decides on Key Legislative Measures


ADDIS ABABA: Today, the Ethiopian Council of Ministers, in its 29th regular session, discussed and passed several important legislative documents.



According to Ethiopian News Agency, initial discussions focused on a draft bill concerning public service delivery and administration, emphasizing its critical role in law enforcement, policy implementation, and national development. The council approved the public service policy with additional inputs, aiming to improve civil service delivery systems, ensure inclusive service, and integrate public service structures.



Other legislative items included policies on small and medium enterprise development, aimed at supporting and expanding this sector to bolster economic growth. The council also addressed a draft decree on the Environmental Protection Authority’s role, operational structure, and capacity to enforce environmental policies and international agreements.



Further, it discussed enhancing the national metrology institute’s capacity, establishing the Ethiopian National Accreditation Office, and reestablishing the Ethiopian Conformity Assessment Enterprise to ensure standards and safety in trade. Each of these decrees, along with a decree concerning the organizational structure of the Refugees and Returnees Affairs Service, was passed to be effective upon publication in the Negarit Gazette. Additionally, a draft bill on Ethiopian Standards was referred to the House of Peoples’ Representatives for approval.
