Sourou Province Witnesses Return of Administration After Two-Year Hiatus

SOUROU — The local administration has made a return to a commune in the Sourou province, located approximately forty kilometers from the provincial capital, after a two-year absence due to security concerns. This development was observed on Tuesday, February 13, 2024, marking a significant step towards normalcy in the area.

According to Burkina Information Agency, the area, which had been under the influence of terrorist groups since 2021, saw a notable presence of merchants and buyers, signaling a revival of economic activities. The absence of the administration had led to a mass exodus of residents seeking safety elsewhere, while those who remained faced harsh conditions under the rule of unidentified armed groups.

Residents recall the threats and violence they faced for everyday transactions, with strict prohibitions on the sale of items like alcohol and cigarettes. The presence of the defense and security forces (FDS) and the Volunteers for the Defense of the Fatherland (VDP) since September 2023 has been pivotal in restoring trust and safety in the community.

The gradual return of those who fled the threats, the resumption of previously banned commodities, and the ability of traders to travel for goods without fear highlight the improving conditions. The collaboration between the community and the FDS/VDP has ensured a safer environment for business and daily life.

The reestablishment of the special delegation and the resumption of healthcare services and education reflect the broader recovery of social services in the commune. Healthcare workers report that the health center is fully operational, and pharmaceutical supplies are consistent. Educational activities have also restarted, with schools reopening and calls for parental support to facilitate the return of students.

The collective efforts of the FDS and VDP have been crucial in this turnaround, earning them widespread recognition and gratitude from the community. The commitment to security and the resilience of the local population are seen as vital components in the ongoing process of restoring peace and stability in the Sourou province.
