WINDHOEK: The City of Windhoek (CoW) has cautioned residents against the illegal use of fireworks during New Year’s Eve, emphasizing that only the city is authorized to conduct such displays. The official fireworks show will be held at the CoW head office parking lot as part of the annual New Year Celebration.

According to Namibia Press Agency, CoW spokesperson Lydia Amutenya clarified in an interview that the city holds the exclusive license to manage fireworks displays, ensuring they are conducted safely and by trained professionals. “Towards the end of the show, we will have our fireworks. Unfortunately, the fireworks are entrusted only to us because they need to be set off in a controlled and safe environment by experts,” Amutenya stated.

She also warned residents who have purchased fireworks that setting them off is illegal and could result in fines. Amutenya highlighted the distress illegal fireworks can cause to domestic animals, urging residents to refrain from using them. “Illegal fireworks cause significant distress especially to domestic animals like dogs, so if you have already bought fireworks, don’t set them off. It’s illegal and could lead to penalties. If you haven’t bought any – save your money, we will handle it for you,” she advised.

The New Year Celebration is scheduled to start at 14h00 and will showcase performances by 16 local artists. Amutenya encouraged early attendance to enjoy the full array of performances, though she withheld the name of the headlining artist to ensure audience presence throughout the event. “We’re not revealing who will close off the show or help us transition into 2025 because people often show up only when their favourite artists are scheduled to perform. We want everyone to be present from the beginning, so each artist feels they are performing for a full and engaged audience,” she said.

In addition to musical performances, the event will feature a kiddies’ corner that opens with the first performances, providing activities for younger attendees. “The setup is complete, and we’re ready to welcome you. Come join us as we celebrate and count down to 2025 together,” Amutenya concluded.
