LUANDA: The Minister of State for Social Affairs, Maria do Rosário Bragança, emphasized that National Independence is the most significant achievement for Angolans, marking the culmination of a determined struggle that began in 1961 and led to liberation from colonial rule in 1975. Speaking on behalf of President João Lourenço at the 49th anniversary of National Independence, Bragança highlighted the courage of the Angolan people in ending colonial domination.
According to Angola Press News Agency, Bragança paid tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for Angola’s freedom and acknowledged the support from international allies in achieving the nation’s long-awaited independence. She stressed the importance of honoring those who advocated for Angola’s self-determination and freedom.
Bragança noted the challenges faced post-independence, such as the massive departure of skilled personnel critical to public administration and other sectors. In response, the first President of Angola, Agostinho Neto, launche
d a literacy campaign in 1976 to address the 85 percent illiteracy rate, which involved recruiting foreign advisors and training thousands of young Angolans abroad.
Highlighting the historical province of Malanje as a symbol of resistance, Bragança recalled the anti-colonial revolt in Baixa de Cassanje on January 4, 1961. She announced plans to construct monuments in honor of the heroes of the Ndongo and Matamba kingdoms in Muculu-a-ngola, Marimba municipality.
The minister also discussed the government’s comprehensive program for reconstruction and national reconciliation, aiming to restore infrastructure and promote unity. She emphasized that reconciliation is crucial for national progress and unity, urging Angolans to overcome past animosities and embrace the nation’s multicultural diversity.
Bragança asserted that national reconciliation is an ongoing task for all generations, essential for building a united Angola that respects and celebrates diversity. She reiterated that unity should be the foundati
onal strength for creating a prosperous, democratic, and peaceful nation, emphasizing the importance of preserving peace as a valuable asset for all citizens.
The event, held at the Palanca Negra Gigante gaming pavilion under the theme ‘November 11, National Unity, Production and Sustainable Development,’ was attended by provincial governor Marcos Nhunga, ministers, and secretaries of state.
