BUSIA – During the International Women’s Day celebrations at Korinda Women’s Prison on Friday, Beatrice Opwapo, a nominated Member of County Assembly from Busia, called on both the County and National governments to improve living conditions for children residing with their mothers in prison facilities. Opwapo emphasized the need for separate rooms to provide privacy for mothers, especially during dressing, and advocated for a special diet to ensure the healthy growth of these children.

According to Kenya News Agency, the lack of privacy and adequate nutrition for children living in prisons with their mothers is a significant concern that needs to be addressed. She announced plans to introduce a motion in the County Assembly aimed at developing policies to support female inmates and their children living in correctional facilities.

Elisha Odende, the officer in charge of Korinda Main Prison, highlighted the importance of rehabilitation and encouraged female inmates to use their time in prison to learn new skills for income generation, thereby reducing the likelihood of re-engaging in criminal activities. He mentioned that there are male inmates who have successfully pursued higher education while in custody, serving as an inspiration for others.

Patricia Makali, the officer in charge of Korinda Women’s Prison, urged inmates to embrace forgiveness and move past bitterness, contributing to their emotional and mental rehabilitation. The event saw participation from various religious groups, who donated food and non-food items to the inmates, reinforcing the message of support and inclusion.

The celebration also served as a platform to educate and sensitize inmates about gender-based violence, with religious leaders encouraging understanding and respect towards women to help reduce related atrocities. The initiative reflects a broader commitment to fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment for women and children in prison settings, aligning with this year’s International Women’s Day theme of inspiration and inclusion.
