Burkinabè and Russian Communities in Ouagadougou Celebrate President Putin’s Inauguration

OUAGADOUGOU – Burkinabè and Russian citizens gathered in Ouagadougou on Tuesday to watch the live broadcast of President Vladimir Putin’s swearing-in ceremony, organized by the African Initiatives association. The event was held in a convivial atmosphere where attendees celebrated the re-election of the Russian leader.

According to Burkina Information Agency, a development worker and member of the Russian-Burkinabe African Initiative association, the gathering was a significant occasion for members who consider themselves ‘true friends’ of Russia. The ceremony, which took place on May 7, 2024, at the Kremlin, featured President Putin committing to determine ‘the destiny of Russia by ourselves and only by ourselves, for the good of current and future generations’.

The event also saw participation from the association of former Burkinabè students in Russia. Mahamadi Sawadogo, a representative of the group, commented on the support Russia has provided to Burkina Faso, particularly in combating terrorism, noting significant progress in this area.

Yvette Hien Gbian, the secretary-general of the Russo-Burkinabe business and friendship club, also expressed enthusiasm for the deepening ties between Burkina Faso and Russia. She highlighted the mutual struggles and aspirations of the Russian and Burkinabè peoples, emphasizing their collective efforts toward sovereignty and self-expression.

The event concluded with a buffet, hosted by the Russo-Burkinabe African Initiative association, celebrating the friendship and collaborative spirit between the two nations.
