Ouagadougou: Public sector material accountants in Burkina Faso will convene their inaugural forum in Ouagadougou from May 7 to 10, 2025, with the primary objective of evaluating their progress and suggesting solutions to enhance asset management practices.
According to Burkina Information Agency, Quartermaster Colonel Issa Compaor©, the technical advisor to the Minister of the Economy, emphasized the need for a thorough evaluation of the current state of material accounting. He urged participants to identify existing shortcomings and propose recommendations that are realistic, applicable, and sustainable. This forum marks a significant step for Burkina Faso, which has been implementing public sector material accounting since July 8, 2016.
Compaor© highlighted the importance of this assessment after nearly a decade of implementation, as it will help formulate strategies for improved management of the State’s non-financial resources. The representative of the Minister of Economy underscored the role of material accounting in ensuring transparency and efficient management of assets within public bodies.
The Director General of Real Estate and State Equipment, Djakaridja Barro, noted that since the institutionalization of material accounting, 103 accountants have been appointed across ministries and public establishments. This network has facilitated the establishment of a responsible management policy for non-financial assets in public bodies.
Barro stated that the forum aims to enhance the governance performance of material accountants by proposing concrete solutions for data quality improvement and strengthening internal control systems. The discussions will revolve around the central theme: “Governance of the State’s non-financial assets: role and responsibilities of the chief materials accountant.”
Several sub-themes will be explored during the forum, including the rationalization of public expenditure through good governance in asset management, as well as the current state, challenges, and prospects for material accounting in public administration.
A tribute was paid to former directors general of real estate and state equipment during the forum’s launch.
