Cardinals Elect New Pope Amidst Anticipation at Vatican

Vatican City: Cardinals gathered in conclave succeeded in electing the new head of the Catholic Church this Thursday, signaling white smoke billowing from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican, where the vote took place.

According to Burkina Information Agency, to be elected, one of the 133 cardinals under the age of 80 participating in the vote had to receive two-thirds of the votes, or 89. The 267th pope will appear, after donning the white cassock, on the balcony of St. Peter's Basilica to announce his reign and pronounce the blessing Urbi et orbi (to the city and the world).
