OUAGADOUGOU – In a significant shift in its approach to international assistance, Burkina Faso’s Prime Minister, Dr. Apollinaire Joachimson Kyélèm de Tambèla, conveyed to Technical and Financial Partners (PTF) that the nation seeks a departure from the traditional, condition-laden development aid. This announcement came during the inaugural 2023 meeting between the Burkinabè government and the PTFs held in Ouagadougou on March 7.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Burkina Faso has experienced a longstanding issue with ineffective development aid, which, despite substantial funding over the years, has failed to yield visible on-ground results. The Prime Minister advocated for a collective self-examination among all stakeholders to identify and rectify the failures in existing partnerships. He emphasized the necessity of transitioning towards a more equitable and constructive collaboration, suggesting a move from dependency on aid to a genuine partnership model.

Highlighting the need for aid that leads to tangible outcomes and sustainable development, the Prime Minister urged for assistance that aligns with Burkina Faso’s actual needs and contributes to the country’s economic structures. He pointed out the successful Sino-Zambian cooperation on the Zambia-Tanzania railway project as an exemplary model of impactful international partnership.

Dr. Kyélèm de Tambèla underscored several priority sectors within Burkina Faso that require attention and investment, including infrastructure development and counter-terrorism efforts. He also highlighted the critical importance of peace and security for the nation’s progress and expressed disappointment over the reluctance of some international partners to support security restoration efforts.

Moreover, the Prime Minister dismissed the notion of conducting elections purely as a democratic formality, stating that future elections would be purpose-driven, aimed at breaking the cycle of poverty and achieving developmental objectives. This stance reflects a broader call for a pragmatic and tailored approach to international cooperation, one that respects and responds to Burkina Faso’s specific challenges and aspirations.

As Burkina Faso faces a pivotal moment, Dr. Kyélèm de Tambèla’s message is a call for more genuine and adaptive international solidarity, urging partners to reconsider their engagement strategies to better meet the nation’s development and security needs.
