Ethiopia’s Startup Ecosystem Experiences Remarkable Growth

ADDIS ABABA — Ethiopia is witnessing a significant transformation within its startup ecosystem, thanks to concerted efforts by the government and private sector. A recent panel discussion highlighted the nation’s growing reputation as a fertile ground for entrepreneurial ventures, with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed emphasizing the critical role of the startup ecosystem in addressing major national challenges.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, Ethiopia’s burgeoning startup scene spans various sectors, fueled by a youthful population with a strong inclination towards science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. The country’s strategic focus on startups is part of a broader ambition to combat high unemployment, attract more foreign direct investment (FDI), and improve tax collection. Notable international backers like the Master Card Foundation and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have pledged substantial financial support, further propelling the startup landscape.

The Prime Minister also announced the Khalifa Foundation’s commitment to a $100-million fund aimed at supporting Ethiopian startups, small, and medium-sized enterprises. This move is part of a larger strategy that includes policy reforms, the establishment of a National Steering Committee, and the legalization of previously restricted sectors like fintech, showcasing the government’s commitment to fostering innovation and embracing new technologies.
