Residents Encouraged to Use Alternative Dispute Resolution for Land Issues

Nakuru – Residents of Nakuru County are being encouraged to utilize Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) methods to address the persistent delays in issuing title deeds. John Kihagi, the County Executive for Lands, Physical Planning, Housing, and Urban Development, advocated for ADR as an efficient and cost-effective solution for the county’s land disputes.

According to Kenya News Agency, who spoke at Sumak farm in Gaakwa and Kiriko villages, Rongai Sub- County, ADR presents a more flexible approach to resolving land issues that have been ongoing since as far back as 1964. The area Member of County Assembly (MCA) and County Assembly Majority leader, Dr. Alex Lang’at, supported this view, stating that ADR allows for amicable resolutions and helps maintain relationships while addressing the unique needs of the parties involved.

Dr. Lang’at highlighted the benefits of ADR processes like mediation or arbitration, which are typically quicker than traditional court litigation. He emphasized the significance of ADR in resolving land disputes, which often involve complex personal and community relationships. The MCA also noted the cost-effectiveness of ADR, as it avoids legal fees, court costs, and other expenses associated with court proceedings.

The planner assured residents of Kiriko, Kamwaura, and Sumek farms, who have been waiting for title deeds since 1964 due to individual differences, administrative processes, and boundary disputes, that embracing ADR would expedite the resolution process.
