Nakuru County Targets Reduction of Non-Revenue Water Losses

Nakuru – In an effort to optimize water resource utilization, Nakuru County Government has initiated steps to reduce Non-Revenue Water (NRW) losses. This initiative aims at ensuring the efficient use of water, reducing operational costs, and enhancing the performance of water services. The County Executive Member for Environment and Water Resources, Dr. Nelson Maara, highlighted this strategic move during a workshop on NRW at a Nakuru hotel.

According to Kenya News Agency, effectively managing NRW is crucial for the efficiency and sustainability of water supply systems. Non-revenue water, as he clarified, refers to water that is lost before reaching the end-user, resulting in no revenue generation for the water utility. These losses typically occur due to leaks, theft, inaccurate metering, and other factors.

Dr. Maara emphasized that tackling NRW would involve reducing power bills by introducing solar energy to pump water, which would help water companies maximize output and increase profits. He also noted that water companies bear significant costs in treating and distributing water; therefore, minimizing NRW losses reduces the need for water treatment and pumping, leading to considerable cost savings.

Moreover, Dr. Maara pointed out that leaks and other NRW losses can cause long-term damage to infrastructure. Addressing these issues is vital for better asset management, reducing wear and tear on pipes, pumps, and other components of the water supply system.

The initiative is also seen as a critical element in combating climate change, given the dependence of all living things, from humans to animals and trees, on water. Dr. Maara lamented that a major contributor to unreliable water supply in the country stems from unaddressed outflows, drips, and trickles. Reducing NRW losses is key to maintaining optimal water pressure in the distribution system, ensuring that consumers receive water at appropriate pressure levels.

Effective management of NRW, as observed by Dr. Maara, will also enhance the accountability of water services to the public and stakeholders, demonstrating responsible and sustainable water resource practices in Nakuru County and beyond.
