Initiative to Tackle Nyakach Flooding Launched by Local Philanthropist

Kisumu – In Kisumu, businessman and philanthropist Jonathan Opande has announced a new initiative to combat the persistent flooding caused by river Miriu in Nyando, particularly affecting the Nyakach area. Opande made this commitment during his visit to the flood-affected regions, where he also donated to displaced residents. He observed that the current flooding, different from typical Elnino floods, is exacerbated by water from the KeGen Dam.

According to Kenya News Agency, Speaking at Nyakweri center, Opande pledged to open and desilt river Miriu and construct dykes to help end the recurring flooding. He also distributed relief food and other necessities to those affected. Opande noted the urgency of the situation, as the floods have destroyed crops leading to potential starvation. He called for support from other well-wishers to assist the affected communities.

Residents, including Alice Ohongo from Nyakweri and Denita Atieno from West Koguta, who sought refuge at Nyakweri camp, expressed gratitude for Opande’s assistance. They highlighted the dire situation caused by the flooding, which has left them reliant on aid after losing their means of subsistence agriculture.

Opande reassured the residents of his commitment to alleviating their suffering through measures like dyke construction, which will not only address the flooding but also prevent hippos from damaging their farms.
