Nyanza Region Escalates Battle Against Illegal Alcohol Operations

NYANZA – Following a comprehensive law enforcement initiative, 221 individuals have been detained in the Nyanza Region for their involvement with unauthorized bars and the production of illicit brews.

According to Kenya News Agency, the crackdown commenced last Thursday, leading to over 500 operations targeting illegal alcohol-related activities. The coordinated efforts included personnel from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), Anti-counterfeit Authority (ACA), and local government liquor licensing officials, aiming to eliminate the distribution and sale of unlawful alcoholic beverages and narcotics in the region.

Mworoa highlighted the enhanced surveillance measures along Lake Victoria, which have been implemented to intercept illegal alcohol shipments across the waters. The region’s proximity to Tanzania has been exploited for smuggling activities, particularly through the Isebania border, prompting the regional authorities to plan collaborative meetings with Tanzanian agencies to fortify cross-border enforcement.

The Regional Commissioner called for compliance from all alcohol vendors and reiterated that only legally sanctioned establishments should continue operations. She issued a stern warning against any form of resistance or hostility toward law enforcement personnel, citing a recent incident in Nyamira where an official was assaulted during an enforcement operation.

Mworoa emphasized the importance of integrity and alertness among officers to ensure the success of the crackdown and announced an upcoming regional security conference in Kisumu. This meeting will gather County Commissioners and Police Commanders to deliberate on the initiative’s progress and address any emerging challenges.
