Kwale Intensifies Crackdown on Illicit Drugs and Alcohol

Kwale – The Kwale County administration has launched a comprehensive initiative to eradicate the distribution and consumption of illicit drugs and unauthorized alcohol within its jurisdiction. County Commissioner Stephen Orinde announced this escalated effort following a pivotal security meeting at the Kwale Cultural Centre, which convened key local government and law enforcement officials.

According to Kenya News Agency, the reinforced campaign will target all six sub-counties in Kwale, employing enhanced anti-narcotic operations and intelligence-gathering to dismantle drug and illicit liquor networks. The initiative responds to rising concerns over substance abuse’s impact on the local youth and community at large, as highlighted in discussions with enforcement agencies and community leaders.

NACADA’s regional statistics underscore the urgency of this initiative, revealing a distressing prevalence of drug addiction among the youth in coastal counties, including Kwale. Despite ongoing efforts to combat this issue, the persistent rise in substance abuse demands more assertive action.

Orinde, who also serves as the Chairman of the County Security and Intelligence Committee (CSIC), called upon residents to actively participate in this crusade by reporting suspected drug activities. He emphasized that the campaign would be comprehensive, targeting not only street-level dealers but also any complicit officials, ensuring accountability across all societal levels.

The meeting’s discourse, further enriched by contributions from Deputy Government Spokesperson Mwanaisha Chidzuga and NACADA Coast Regional Manager George Karissa, painted a stark picture of the drug menace’s severity in the region. The officials stressed the socio-economic ramifications of unchecked drug and alcohol abuse, particularly its debilitating effect on the youth’s potential to contribute constructively to society.

Chidzuga urged local stakeholders to consolidate their efforts against the backdrop of a broader regional crisis, advocating for collaborative prevention and intervention strategies. She emphasized the need for a unified approach to prevent the erosion of the coastal region’s human capital and preserve its socio-economic future.
