Ethiopia’s Pursuit of Seaport Access Deemed Essential for Regional Trade and Economic Growth, Says Jigjiga University President

JIGJIGA, ETHIOPIA — The acquisition of a seaport is paramount for Ethiopia’s integration into regional trade and the enhancement of economic benefits across the region, stated Beshir Abdullahi Mohammoud, President of Jigjiga University. During a panel discussion co-organized by Jigjiga University and the Institute of Foreign Affairs, Beshir emphasized the critical role of seaport access in reducing the costs of exports and imports, attracting foreign investment, and boosting trade, particularly in the eastern part of Ethiopia.

According to Ethiopian News Agency, the initiative to obtain a seaport will not only serve Ethiopia’s economic interests but will also foster cooperation and mutual advantages among neighboring countries. He highlighted the university’s commitment to supporting this national effort through research and diplomatic engagements aimed at realizing Ethiopia’s seaport ambitions.

In a presentation at the panel discussion, Dareskedar Taye, Director General of Europe and America Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and a researcher at the Institute, underscored the existential significance of securing a seaport for Ethiopia. He outlined various justifications for Ethiopia’s quest, including geopolitical, natural, historical, economic considerations, international laws, and security concerns. Taye also pointed out the disadvantages faced by landlocked countries on the international stage due to the lack of direct seaport access.

Taye advocated for the use of inclusive diplomacy, a win-win negotiation approach, engagement with regional and continental organizations, and the promotion of regional integration through projects like hydro power. He stressed the importance of the scholarly community and media in supporting Ethiopia’s strategic objectives to secure a seaport, which he believes would substantially contribute to the country’s and the region’s prosperity.
