Burkina: Officers under arrest after proven coup attempt (updated)

Officers and other actors have been arrested, while others are on the run, after a ‘proven coup d’état attempt’, which took place yesterday September 26, 2023, announced the Burkinabè government in a press release read Wednesday evening on national television.

In the meantime, the end of the investigations, the executive invites the populations not to incriminate certain personalities, notably the ambassador of Burkina Faso to Ghana and the chief of general staff of the Armed Forces.

Earlier in the afternoon, President Ibrahim Traoré, in office since September 30, 2022, thanked the populations who came out massively last night to block the way for the destabilizers.

He also reaffirmed his commitment to leading the Transition successfully and on the path to assumed sovereignty.

‘The Transitional Government informs public opinion that a proven coup attempt was foiled on September 26, 2023 by the Burkinabè intelligence and security services.

A
t present, officers and other alleged actors involved in this attempt at destabilization have been arrested and others actively sought.

The actors of this disastrous destabilization project, driven by interests at odds with the dynamic of reconquest of our national territory and the sovereignty of our dear country, harbored the dark intention of attacking the institutions of the Republic and precipitating our country in chaos.

While waiting for the Military Prosecutor to provide more details on this plot, the Government deeply regrets that Burkinabè, moreover officers whose oath is to defend the Fatherland, have erred in an enterprise of such a nature which aims to hinder the march of the Burkinabè people for their sovereignty and their total liberation from the terrorist hordes who try to enslave them.

The Government salutes the patriotic action and the high sense of duty of the Defense and Security Forces which made it possible to put a stop to this enterprise.

It pays vibrant tribute to the entire Burk
inabè people and particularly to its youth for their resolute and historic commitment to defending the Homeland and protecting it against all those who want to take us backwards into history.

The Government reassures that all light will be shed on this attempted coup d’état.

He calls on the population to be vigilant in the face of cleverly maintained amalgams, particularly on social networks, tending to implicate certain personalities including the Chief of General Staff of the Armed Forces and the Ambassador of Burkina Faso to Ghana.

In any case, ongoing investigations will help unmask the instigators of this plot. »
