Man allegedly commits suicide after quarrel with girlfriend

A 36-year-old man allegedly committed suicide on Saturday after a quarrel with his girlfriend at a farm situated outside Grootfontein.

Namibian Police Force (NamPol) crime investigations coordinator for the Otjozondjupa Region, Deputy Commissioner Edna Nawa, in an interview with Nampa on Monday said the deceased has been identified by relatives as Alfredo Venalavo.

Venalavo is an Angolan national who worked on Farm Meidelin outside Grootfontein for several years, said Nawa.

“It is now alleged that the deceased had a fight with his girlfriend on Saturday night, and shortly after both went to sleep in separate rooms,” said Nawa.

On Sunday morning family members of the deceased, accompanied by his girlfriend, went to the room where the deceased had slept, with a plan to resolve the couple’s misunderstandings, Nawa said.

However, Venalavo was not found in the room.

Preliminary police investigations indicate that Venalavo had allegedly swallowed petrol and ran into the bushes, where he hanged himself with a makeshift rope.

The deceased allegedly told another farmworker that he had intentions to hang himself, said Nawa.

“The deceased further left a suicide note,” stated Nawa.

An inquest docket in the matter has been opened at the Grootfontein Police Station, and no foul play is suspected.
