Chemoge High Altitude Training Centre Set for Upgrade, Confirms Sports CS Ababu Namwamba

Mt. Elgon, Kenya – The Chemoge High Altitude Training Centre located in Mt. Elgon, Bungoma County, is poised for significant upgrades and equipping, according to Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba. Namwamba’s announcement brought joy and celebration to the region, especially for local and national athletes who will benefit from the enhanced facilities.

According to Kenya News Agency, Speaking at Banantega in Mt. Elgon during the National tree planting exercise, Namwamba highlighted the strategic importance of the facility and its capacity to serve athletes. “We are going to equip this facility and give it a complete face lift. It’s one of a kind in the country,” he declared.

The Cabinet Secretary committed to the completion of sports facilities nationwide to alleviate congestion at Iten in Elgeyo Marakwet County and other areas. The Chemoge centre, a state-of-the-art facility, includes amenities like a gym, hostels, VIP rooms, and a cafeteria. Namwamba emphasized that the completion of the High Altitude Training Centre at Chemoge would not only benefit sportsmen and women but also stimulate the local economy and attract investment opportunities to the region.

The Mt. Elgon High Altitude Centre, initiated between 2013 and 2017 under Governor Lusaka’s first tenure, had been abandoned by his predecessor. The region, known for producing athletic legends like the late Ben Jipcho, the first Kenyan to win a long-distance race and gold for Kenya, is set to see renewed investment and attention with these developments.
