Burkina Faso plans to build a nuclear power plant by 2030 (TASS)

Burkina Faso hopes to build a nuclear power plant in the country by 2030, Minister of Energy, Mines and Quarries Simon-Pierre Boussim said Thursday in Moscow. in his speech during Russian Energy Week.

He stressed that the country hoped to be able to build nuclear power plants by the end of the decade to solve the problem of energy shortage, adding that the national industry had a vital need for this energy. He indicated that Ouagadougou had already initiated cooperation with Russian companies in the energy sector.

Simon-Pierre Boussim specified that the country’s electricity needs were currently estimated at more than 500 MW and could triple by 2030. With current capacities, the industry will develop with a delay of five to ten years, he said. he continued, noting that the objective was to double electricity production by 2030 to help launch the industrialization of Burkina.

A memorandum of understanding for the construction of a nuclear power plant will be signed tomorrow Friday between the Ministry of
Energy and Rosatom, the Russian federal atomic energy agency.

The head of state of Burkina Faso, Ibrahim Traoré, declared at the end of July at the Russia-Africa summit to Russian President Vladimir Putin the importance for him of having, if possible, as soon as possible, a nuclear power plant in Burkina Faso, even to cover the energy needs of the sub-region.
