Mombasa Residents Warned to Avoid Coast Due to Impending Tropical Cyclone Hidaya

MOMBASA—Residents of Mombasa have been advised to exercise caution and steer clear of the coast due to the approach of Tropical Cyclone ‘Hidaya’. This warning follows meteorological predictions of heavy rains, high waves, and strong winds expected to impact the region.

According to Kenya News Agency, Chairman and Founder of the Mombasa Walk Movement, the community has been urged to prioritize safety and environmental conservation during this turbulent weather period. Speaking at Nyali Beach on World Press Freedom Day, Abdulrahman highlighted the need for increased media coverage on the environmental challenges posed by such weather events, particularly the impact on marine life due to coastal litter.

The event, which coincided with World Press Freedom Day, included a 10-kilometer walk from Nyali Center to Nyali Beach, which was attended by hundreds of journalists and local residents. Participants engaged in a series of activities including beach cleaning and a friendly football match between Coast Media FC and Mombasa Walk Movement, aimed at promoting environmental awareness and press freedom.

Nyali sub-county police commander Daniel Masaba also emphasized the importance of vigilance during the cyclone period, advising residents to avoid water-based activities until the cyclone passes. The day’s activities concluded with a football match where Coast Media FC claimed victories in both the women’s and men’s categories with scores of 2-1.
