Lutombi opens partially completed Windhoek-Okahandja road

Motorists can now use the newly constructed dual road section of the Omakunde and Gross Barmen interchanges on the Windhoek-Okahandja road, following the official opening by the Roads Authority on Wednesday.

Opening the 21-kilometre section here on Wednesday, Roads Authority Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Conrad Lutombi said northbound and southbound motorists can use the Windhoek-Okahandja dual carriageway up to the Omakunde-Gross Barmen interchanges.

Lutombi said the partially completed road project is currently standing at 87 per cent, however following the completion of the 11km section stretch from Omakunde to Okahandja which leads to the Omakunde-Gross Barmen interchanges, they felt it was prudent to open the road to motorists.

He said the project, valued at N.dollars 997 million, is expected to be completed in March 2024, noting that thus far N.dollars 741 million has been utilised.

‘We felt we should let our road users enjoy the road while we are busy with the finishing part. The work is still
in progress on this section. We are still doing the road markings as well as the final surfacing in terms of signage… But we felt that it was important that road users can use it up until the Omakunde-Gross Barmen intersection,’ he said.

Lutombi further noted that the road construction is contracted to a joint venture of local company Otesa and international entity, CMC, which employed about 300 locals.

He said the road will be officially opened by President Hage Geingob once completed.
