Zoundw©ogo/CERFI Conference Explores Intersection of Islam and Local Traditions

Zoundw©ogo: The regional branch of the Nazinon of the Circle for Islamic Studies, Research and Training (CERFI) held a public conference in Manga centered on the theme "Islam and Traditions." During the event, Sheikh Sidi Mohamed Kon© emphasized that Islam aims to enrich and purify local traditions rather than erase them.

According to Burkina Information Agency, Sheikh Sidi Mohamed Kon©, the keynote speaker, stated, "Islam did not come to erase the black man and replace his traditions, but, like a goldsmith, it came to polish the rough diamond of our traditions." His presentation highlighted the potential for Islamic practices and local traditions to merge, creating a robust social identity.

Sheikh Kon© explained that Islamic law acknowledges custom as a supplementary source of law, and practices that align with the customs of a people and do not contradict the Quran and Sunna are deemed acceptable. He illustrated Islam's adaptability with a metaphor, comparing it to flowing water that takes on the color and shape of its environment.

The conference also explored the commonalities between Islamic practices and ancestral traditions, such as solidarity, respect for elders, a sense of honor, and the reinforcement of family ties. However, Sheikh Kon© underscored that Islam imposes certain limits, emphasizing the belief in the oneness of God and the acknowledgment of Prophet Muhammad as a messenger.

Ali Sawadogo, Deputy National Secretary General of CERFI, noted the high attendance as a testament to the interest in these regional conferences. He praised the theme's relevance in clarifying misconceptions about Islam. This sentiment was echoed by Imam Noufou Zoungrana and Z©nabo Zoulabou, who are key figures in the region's Islamic community.

The CERFI 2026 regional conferences, held on May 3, 2026, across Burkina Faso's thirteen regions, aim to benefit Muslims and others interested in gaining a deeper understanding of Islam.
