Zondoma: A public conference focusing on civics and citizenship was held at the private high school Saint Henri de Osso in Gourcy on Wednesday, October 9, 2024. The event, organized by the Provincial Directorate of Post-Primary and Secondary Education (DPEPS) of Zondoma in collaboration with the Association Monde Rural (AMR), aimed to educate students on becoming responsible citizens.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the conference gathered students from various post-primary and secondary schools within the commune of Gourcy. The initiative is part of the second phase of the national days of patriotic commitment and citizen participation, a project launched by the government of Burkina Faso on October 2. Saïdou Ouédraogo, the provincial director of post-primary and secondary education, emphasized the importance of civic education in fostering a sense of patriotism and responsibility among young citizens.
The discussions at the conference were led by Salif Sawadogo, head of the “Local Governance and
Decentralization” department at AMR. Sawadogo and his team engaged students in conversations about civic-mindedness, the rights and duties of citizens, and the significance of the institutions of the Republic. The conference also encouraged students to respect and uphold the country’s laws and institutions.
Additionally, the event featured commitments from students like Relwendé Akil Amir Soro, a 6th-grade student, who pledged to respect the country’s laws and institutions. The conference is part of a broader set of activities including a flag-raising ceremony at Niességa high school, a sanitation day at the Gourcy market, and a fundraiser across the province’s educational establishments. These activities are scheduled to run from October 2 to 16, 2024, under the theme: “For a strong and sovereign nation, let us not betray our homeland!”
