Ziro: The provincial transhumance committee takes stock of transhumance

The provincial transhumance committee of Ziro held its first ordinary session this Tuesday, July 04, 2023 at the Sapouy High Commission. Chaired by High Commissioner Saïba Zoromé, the committee took stock of transhumance and related conflicts in the province.

From 2020 to May 31, 2023, the province of Ziro has emptied 2,133 cattle for transhumance at the national level and 2,106 for the cross-border level, particularly towards Ghana.

These statistics are delivered by the provincial directorate of agriculture, animal and fishery resources of Ziro during a presentation made to the provincial transhumance committee.

A very difficult phenomenon to control, transhumance is generally done to solve animal feeding problems, explained the exhibitor of the day, Amèdé Tiendrébéogo, who is also Sapouy zone manager.

Reception and transit zone, the province of Ziro issued on May 31, 2023; 58 national transhumance certificates (CNT) and 51 international transhumance certificates (CIT).

But nowadays, climate change and the security issue, the lack of grazing space, are the main causes of this transhumance in the Ziro.

The phenomenon is much more accentuated in the municipalities of Gao, Cassou and Sapouy. And every day that God allows, the municipal services record conflicts related to transhumance. These are generally damage to fields, slaughtering and poisoning of animals and land disputes.

To reduce the phenomenon of transhumance and its consequences, the members of the provincial committee made some recommendations to the various actors. To the State, they recommend the review of Law 034 on rural land and the physical and legal security of cattle tracks and pastoral areas.

They recommend that producers adopt new adaptation techniques through the intensification of production. Transhumant herders are advised to obtain from the decentralized services the two compulsory documents, the national transhumance certificate (CNT) and the international transhumance certificate (CIT). These documents are security guarantees for them.
