Accra: Zimbabwe and Tunisia’s Foreign Ministers stressed the importance of Africa’s demand for reparations, justice, and proper global representation as it aims at creating harmony among humanity across the globe. This year’s African Union theme focuses on ‘Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations.’
According to Ethiopian News Agency, the theme calls for global reparations and healing to restore dignity and justice for Africans and people of African descent who have endured centuries of exploitation and dehumanization. Speaking to ENA, Zimbabwe’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Amon Murwira, said Africa has experienced several injustices throughout history.
“This theme highlights Africa’s plight and how Africa has to react to that kind of environment that it has been exposed to for many centuries, and it’s time to turn the tide and basically justice for Africa,” Murwira stated. Moreover, the minister touched on the African Union’s firm stance on the issue o
f representation at global decision-making platforms, particularly the United Nations Security Council.
“The AU position is known, when it comes to representation at the highest decision making bodies, including the UNSC, the African Union already made that towards representation at the UNSC with four veto power,” he added.
In a similar vein, Tunisia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohamed Ali Nafti, spoke about the importance of discussing the theme within the African Union’s Executive Council and later at the summit. “The main objective is to live in perfect harmony with all people of the world,” Nafti said.
The minister reflected on the sacrifices made by African ancestors to secure dignity and respect for future generations, underlining the significance of the issue for the continent’s progress. He also pointed out the African Union’s growing maturity as an organization and its commitment to better representation on global platforms, such as the United Nations Security Council.
“We hope that this issue
will come out with a good result, so that Africa, our continent, could also be well represented within the United Nations Security Council,” the minister stated.
