Zimbabwe Police to Initiate Crackdown on Illegal Firearms

HARARE—The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is set to initiate a nationwide operation targeting unregistered firearms after a month-long amnesty period prompted by rising armed robbery incidents.

According to Namibia Press Agency, the amnesty, which began on September 1, was designed to allow individuals to voluntarily surrender illegal firearms and ammunition without facing arrest. However, with only eight firearms turned in as of Friday, the police are moving towards more stringent measures. Police spokesperson Paul Nyathi expressed concerns over the ongoing armed robberies across Zimbabwe, indicating that unregistered firearms are likely being used in these criminal activities.

Nyathi’s statement, released via the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), highlighted the urgency of the situation, urging the public, including companies, farmers, miners, hunters, gun dealers, gun clubs, and security firms, to surrender any unauthorized firearms. He also reminded licensed firearm holders to update their records and residential or business addresses with the authorities.

The planned operation, set to commence after the amnesty period ends, aims to significantly reduce crime by apprehending those in possession of illegal firearms across the country.
