Zambezi: Zambezi Governor, Dorothy Kabula, has said the Zambezi Region holds a unique place in Namibia's crop sector. Speaking at the National Agronomy and Horticulture Awards (HANAs) held on Thursday at the Zambezi Waterfront and Tourism Park, the governor said the region is a leading producer of maize and pearl millet for commercial purposes, contributing significantly to national food security by producing over 6,000 tonnes of maize annually.
According to Namibia Press Agency, the challenges faced by the region, such as post-harvest losses of up to 30%, limited processing facilities, and long distances to markets, also present opportunities. Kabula noted that the Namibian Agronomic Board's plans to establish grain collection centres closer to farmers could transform the sector by enhancing market access and improving farmers' incomes.
Kabula pointed out the untapped potential in horticulture within the region, which benefits from fertile soils, abundant water, and a climate suited for tropical crops. She highlighted the possibility of expanding into fruit production, such as mango, avocado, banana, and pineapple, with the aim of processing these into juice, jam, pulp, or dried products, thereby creating economic value.
Investments in storage, irrigation, processing hubs, and modern technology were cited as essential for reducing losses, creating rural industries, and increasing incomes across the region. Kabula emphasized that the event was not only about honoring excellence but also about strengthening partnerships, inspiring innovation, and reaffirming a commitment to a more competitive, resilient, and inclusive crop sector.
The HANAs recognized and rewarded various value chain role players who have made significant contributions to the growth of the agronomy and horticulture industry in Namibia. Over 20 farmers received accolades in different categories in both agronomy and horticulture. The event, held under the theme "Unlocking the potential of the crop sector through agro-processing Innovation," was attended by several stakeholders from the agriculture sector.
