Zabr©: A municipal eco-citizenship unit is being established to strengthen environmental protection. The municipality of Zabr© initiated, on Thursday, the process of setting up its Municipal Eco-Citizenship Cell (CECO), a body desired by the national authorities to promote environmental protection, sanitation, and citizen engagement.
According to Burkina Information Agency, the initiative follows government instructions addressed to local authorities as part of the celebration of the National Environment and Eco-citizenship Week (SNEE) 2026, organised from June 27 to July 4 under the theme: "Climate action and the need to rethink our economic systems for a sustainable future".
Presiding over the meeting, Alain Boubi© Bassano, president of the special delegation (PDS) of the Zabr© municipality, indicated that the environment and urban sanitation are among the government's priority sectors. He explained that the creation of this unit reflects the government's commitment to strengthening local actions for environmental protection. According to him, the municipal eco-citizenship unit aims to be inclusive, by associating the different components of society with initiatives to preserve the living environment.
The head of the departmental Environment service, Boukari Salamb©r©, presented the context of the establishment of this structure before the secretary general of the town hall proceeded to read its responsibilities, in accordance with the draft decree. Following the discussions, the participants suggested expanding the composition of the cell by including a representative of nurserymen, Village Development Councils (VDCs), post-primary and secondary establishments, as well as a representative of the livestock service.
The first activity of the Municipal Eco-Citizenship Unit is scheduled for Saturday, July 11, 2026. It will consist of launching public awareness campaigns on good environmental practices. Monitoring and enforcement operations may be considered subsequently, in accordance with applicable regulations.
