Youths Urged to Embrace Online Platforms for Economic Growth

Mombasa: Youths have been challenged to embrace online jobs to earn a living and improve their welfare in the larger economic growth.

According to Kenya News Agency, the region boasts significant internet connectivity, especially in Kenya, which has six submarine cables originating in Mombasa and plans for a 100,000km high-speed fiber optic infrastructure. However, more efforts are needed to reach hard-to-access areas.

The government has set up an elaborate plan to reinvigorate the digital economy, outlined in the Kenya National Digital Master Plan 2022-2032. This plan includes establishing 25,000 internet hotspots throughout the country to support innovators, youth, and entrepreneurs.

A multi-national company, DDB, has launched an online application promotion platform in Kenya. This platform involves collaboration with major global information sharing platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook. The company aims to provide brand formation and advertising media engagement services to both local and global clients.

DDB Kenya Manager Philip Righa stated that their platform aims to increase application downloads, exposure, and ratings, thus attracting more users. He emphasized that the platform would enable Kenyans to earn money through online jobs, potentially alleviating poverty. The process involves using smartphones, network connections, and a small portion of time to perform online tasks.

Righa explained that the online tasks are typical applications used on gadgets and computers. Completing these tasks helps advertise the applications globally, generating earnings that are shared with DDB employees involved in the online work.

The government was urged to improve internet network availability across the country, as some areas still suffer from poor connectivity, restricting youth from online opportunities. Righa appealed for the expansion of 4G and 5G networks to reach all regions, allowing more citizens to enroll in DDB and participate in online work.

Righa spoke in Mombasa at the opening of DDB's second office in the country, located at the Buxton Point Apartments. This new office aims to support team development, enhance task completion efficiency, and provide employment opportunities.

Zephrine Rigah encouraged full-time employees to consider online jobs as a supplementary income source. He advised youths to seize these opportunities as white-collar jobs are scarce and often require experience. Rigah emphasized that online jobs could serve as a stepping stone for more opportunities and financial independence.

He urged youths to avoid idleness and the reliance on financial support from parents or relatives. Earning their own money, he said, would offer them greater freedom in managing their finances.
